As
a child, Robby lived in several locations around the Southeastern states. He
spent his high school years in Darien, Georgia. After graduating from high school,
Robby decided that he had enough of school for a while and joined the
Army as a Telecommunications Specialist. He had an insatiable desire to
explore the world so his first
chosen two-year assignment was Stuttgart, Germany. Robby loved living
overseas so much that he requested a consecutive overseas tour and was assigned
to Camp Carroll, Korea for one year. After his tour was complete, he requested
an additional overseas tour and was assigned to Bad Kreuznach, Germany where
he finished up his second enlistment. After eight years in the Army, Robby
decided he wanted a change of pace and started a one year defense contracting
position with ITT Industries in Heidelberg,
Germany. Upon completion of his contract, Robby was hired by General Dynamics
in Stuttgart, Germany. After over nine years of living in Germany, Robby started
searching for opportunities in other parts of the world. He is currently
employed by a telecommunications company, working in the Middle East and enjoys
the lifestyle of an expat. Robby spends his free time with his wife Becky
trotting around the globe in search of adventure.
Born
and raised in Singapore, Becky was immersed in the public school system and
learned just enough Chinese to be elected the school’s head prefect. Thankfully,
she dodged the centralized qualification test (a much-dreaded comprehensive
assessment exam) when her family decided to relocate to Hopkinton, Massachusetts.
Becky attended Hopkinton junior/high school before getting accepted into West
Point where she spent the next four years. After graduating, Becky decided to
join the Signal Corps and spent her entire Army commitment in Germany (Bad Kreuznach
and Wiesbaden) with the 1st Armored Division (141 Sig and G6 staff). Although
she thoroughly enjoyed her military experience, Becky decided having unadulterated
freedom was a better choice and got out after her 5 year commitment. Post Army,
Becky became a Navy civilian and spent two years with the Space and Naval Warfare
Systems Center Europe (SPAWAR) as a project engineer in Stuttgart, Germany before
her itchy feet decided to settle in a new continent. She currently enjoys life
working as an overseas contractor, and spends her free time planning future
trips. Becky met Robby through their mutual friend Jose Cuervo and they have
been travel partners ever since that fateful day, visiting over 60 countries
together. They try to visit a new destination every chance they get and have
managed to convert some of their friends/family into travel addicts along the
way.
Below is a poem entitled "Food for Thought" written by James Richmond from Canada that best explains what motivates us. Enjoy and happy travels!
'Why
do you do it?' friends often ask, perplexed,
Brows raised, minds sorely vexed.
'The world out there is dangerous!
Aren't you scared? Why do this?
You need steady work, a house, two cars!
You have only a motorbike, and sleep under stars!'
Dear friend, if you must ask, you cannot know
This curiosity that drives me so.
To you it is hidden; in me rises unbidden!
But one day the world I'll have ridden
By iron steed, then perhaps this need
Will have vanished, finally vanquished!
That day will find me on deathbed,
With no regrets for the life I led.
Will you be able to say the same?
Or will you despair a life worn plain?
I will stake my Himalayan memories
Against your estate of a thousand trees.
Pit my Thai sunset
Against your private jet.
Weigh my horse rides at sunrise
To your Italian suits and ties.
I'll rejoice in friends before I go,
Not the figures of my stock portfolio.
And, amazingly, there are more like me;
They reject slavery, and are truly free.
They took the chance we all had,
And honestly it makes me sad
That you didn't.
You thought you couldn't...
What?
Live without the luxuries
Of all our modern amenities?
You choose the bonds of mortgage, but claim to be free,
Wasting a lifetime absorbed by TV.
Why watch it? but live it!
One life's all you get!
Don't put off 'til morrow and continue to borrow
The lives of strangers; 'tis the greatest of dangers
To the soul
Which grows old
Before its time.
Hercules, Columbus,
Guevara, Odysseus,
Champlain, Agamemnon,
The list goes on...
What have they in common?
Regardless man or god,
The soil of continents they trod,
Not in search of gold but adventure!
Not growing old 'cause they ventured
Far from safety; but far be it from me
To Judge...
The
pitiless pity us
With souls black pitted.
Pray! save it for those less spirited.
For us... our horizons are unlimited.
