Since we enjoyed Bonaire so much the first time in 2022, we decided to have a family reunion here. For the first half of the week, we dove familiar dive sites while the other half of the family got SCUBA certified. The second half of the week was spent diving together. It was great showing off the underwater world with family, although we mourned the state of the coral since our last visit. In March 2023, Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) was first detected in Bonaire. It is a fast moving coral disease and has spread rapidly across the island’s reef systems. It is a highly lethal coral disease (with mortality rates from 66 to 100%) and is considered the most deadly coral disease outbreak in history. It was heartbreaking to see the current state of the coral and its immediate impact on the marine life that normally thrives here. Nevertheless, we still managed to enjoy our dives and thought it was a worthwhile trip. We rented two apartments at Grand Windsock Bonaire and got our dive truck with unlimited Nitrox tanks at AB-Dive Rental to sort out the logistics. It was fun self catering and we had yummy meals thanks to Becky’s mom who whipped up some memorable dishes. We squeezed in 19 dives in a very busy week and still had time to do another self guided walking tour around colorful Kralendijk. All in all, it was a very successful dive trip and we are so excited to have some newly certified divers to plan future dive trips with!
