Australia – South Australia (Adelaide, Hallett Cove, Rapid Bay, Kingscote Jetty, Hopkins Island, Grindal Island, Neptune Islands, Edithburgh Jetty, Second Valley & Victor Harbor)
Adelaide impressed us with its many restaurants, bars, galleries, gardens and museums. Our first 3 nights were based in the central business district next to the Rundle Mall, a pedestrian-only shopping area. In addition to discovering street art and murals hidden on every street corner, we admired the beautiful Adelaide State Library, visited the South Australian Museum, got lost in the excellent Botanic Garden (with a free Dale Chihuly Exhibition), toured the Art Gallery, and stuffed ourselves silly at the Central Market and neighboring Chinatown. From Adelaide, we caught a train over to Hallett Cove for a reunion with Marco, a dive buddy we met in the Philippines. He kept us super busy as we snorkeled Hallett Cove for fresh crab, explored the Port Noarlunga Reef, spent a full day doing wine, mead and gin tastings in the McLaren Vale, hiked the Marion Coastal Walkway, visited Glenelg, kayaked Happy Valley Reservoir, and stumbled through the 5 story d’Arenberg Cube. From Hallett Cove, we linked up with our dive buddies (Brandon & Melissa, Rich & Ally) and joined a 10 day Rodney Fox liveaboard in search of leafy sea dragons, Australian sea lions, and great white sharks. What a fantastic adventure and we saw everything on our bucket list and so much more (pyjama squid, southern blue devils, eastern cleaner clingfish, blue-ringed octopus and dolphins). Back on land, we rented a campervan for a road trip and visited Victor Harbor and Granite Island, Coonalpyn Silo and Larry the Lobster, one of Australia’s quirky “big things”. We also checked out a couple lakes in the Mount Gambier region and visited Umpherston Sinkhole, a beautiful sunken garden oasis. (Up next will be a road trip to Melbourne via the Great Ocean Road!
Adelaide has numerous Asian restaurants so of course we had pho for dinner our first night there!
